ChatChat - Claudia Cragg

Oct 4, 2017

All feedback greatly appreciated. Thank you.

In a renewed conversation (listen, also, to And the Weak Suffer What They Must? Oct. 13, 2016) KGNU's Claudia Cragg speaks here with Yanis Varoufakis, the former finance minister of Greece.

This new book's title, Adults in the Room, borrows a term used pejoratively by Christine Lagarde, the head of the IMF, and provides an extraordinary account of low cunning at the heart of Greece’s 2015 financial bailout. The more defiant the leftwing Syriza government became, the more it was met with intimidation from some or duplicitous reassurance from others. But there are lessons on dealing with power, and the so-called 'Deep Establishment', that apply not only to the EU but also to the Powers That Be in the US.

Varoufakis is the co-founder of the movement, DiEM25, which is campaigning for the revival of democracy in Europe. He is also the author of The Global Minotaur. After teaching for many years in the United States, Britain, and Australia, he is currently a professor of economics at the University of Athens.
